The Center for Stem Cell Research & Application is a newly established one in 2011.The center mainly focus on uncovering mechanisms controlling human pluripotent stem cell (hPSCs, including hESC and hiPSCs) to differentiate into functionally mature hematopoietic cells and exploring the possibility of clinical applications. We also develop methods for efficiently reprogramming human peripheral / umbilical cord blood cells into hiPSCs. We are now fucusing on the following research:1) hPSC-derived hematopoietic stem / progenitor cells. 2)Molecular control of early human hematopoiesis by using hPSC as the model. 3) hPSC-derived erythrocytes as transfusion substitute. 4) hPSC-derived early innate immune cells and their functions. 5) Analysis of diseased hematopoiesis by using patient-specific iPSCs as the model.
Recently, we have successfully gained various grant support from government, such as “973 Project” and National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. We cooperate with many other institutes and universities such as State Key Lab of Experimental Hematology (Tianjin), Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Zhejiang University, and set several joint laboratories with companies to develop possibe clinical applications. With 16 staffs, including 2 senior engineers and 12 masters and doctors, we have published more than 26 papers in recent years.
We are interested in research on induction of hPSCs to functionally mature blood cells (erythrocytes, eosinophils, macrophages and mast cells, etc) and their possible applications. We are also interested in establishing high efficient methods to reprogram a small amount human peripheral / umbilical cord blood cells into hiPSCs and developing diseased models. We are exploring the method to induce mature blood cells in whole humanized system and uncovering mechanisms controlling early hematopoiesis through regulating genes and small molecules.

Dr. Feng Ma, Stem Cell Biologist and Pediatric Hematologist, graduated from Nanjing Medical University in 1983, he worked as a pediatrician at Zhenjiang No.1 Hospital from 1983 to 1988. Since then, he had been working at the Children’s Hospital of Suzhou University and got his Master Degree in Medical Science in 1994. He first went to Japan in 1991 for one-year research on hematopoiesis and again to Japan in 1996 (Both by Sasakawa Medical Foundation, Department of Public Health of China). He gained his PhD Degree in Medical Science at the University of Tokyo in 2000. After then, he has been serving as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, and then an Assistant Professor, at the Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo and Kyoto University.
Dr. Ma’s recent main research is focusing on hESC / hiPSC-derived hematopoietic cells and their possible use in clinical applications. He is currently a Professor of the CAMS & PUMC and the Executive Director of the Institute of Blood Transfusion, CAMS.

Research Area
Bioinformatics Data analysis and application of deep sequencing
This research area focus on monitoring DNA and pathogens in blood circulation, risk factors in stem cells and dried cardboard of blood, in order to get marker of cell transformation (related to cancer), and information of exogenous virus, endogenous virus, bacterial infections, mycoplasma infection and unknown emerging virions. This research work will provide basic medical theory support to transfusion medicine.
